Final Corinthian Race and Awards BBQ on Sunday

The Corinthians will host their fifth and final race on Sunday, Sept. 13. The race will follow the usual format with a 12:30 pm start; racers will take their own time at the finish and report it to Nate Dickinson at 796-4907 or on Channel 66 immediately following the race. There will be awards for the season at the after-race cook-out at the Dickinsons' place on Rockhurst. If you come by boat, anchor and we will bring you in. By car, turn at the Cleverdale store, go North on the Cleverdale Rd. about a half mile, right on Rockhurst Rd., then take the first left out to the point. Go under the arch at the end and it's the first place on the left. If you have not already done so, please contact Nate with your steak reservation as soon as possible.

Catchin' Js Wins Corinthian Race to Sabbath Day Pt

Eight sailors took advantage of brisk south winds of 12 to 15 knots to complete the latest long-distance race added to the Corinthian schedule this year. Vaporize led the fleet around the course, from Hogback Reef to Sabbath Day Point and back, but wound up in fourth on corrected time. Catchin' Js took first. A non-spinnaker fleet raced a shorter course using Hatchet Island near the Mother Bunch as a northern mark. Moriah led the fleet home in just under five hours. Check out the complete results.

Cut Loose Wins Corinthian Women's Race

Shifting and variable winds from 5 to 15 knots tested the skills of our helmswomen as they negotiated Canoe Islands and Hogback, twice around. Crystal Dickinson on Cut Loose took first place. The team of Caroline Jackson and Gretchen Romenesko on JaKo were second, and Moriah's team of Dawn Roy and Deb Parker were third. Complete results on lakegeorgeracing.com.

Dickinsons Take the Ti Race

The Father, The Son, and Spirit: Congratulations to Nate and John Dickinson for winning the Non-Spinn and Spinnaker fleets of this year's Ti Race, respectively. The first Father/Son duo to do so in the history of the race, and on Father's Day to boot. It was a challenging lite wind marathon with the last boat finishing at 6 am Sunday. Congratulations also to Spirit, who eked out the close but uncontested sprint race around Dome. Check out complete results for all fleets.

Storm Scatters Single-Handed Fleet

Just after the start of the Corinthian's Single-Handed Race, a storm cell rolled through the southern basic of Lake George, and the accompanying violent wind gusts wreaked havoc on the racers. All but one abandoned any thoughts of finishing, and a couple of boats ended up on the rocks on the western shore of Long Island. The race and storm generated a lot of comments on the mailing list, you can read the thread archives if you missed it the first time around.

Single-Handed Race on Sunday

Single-Handed RaceOK, so you can actually use two hands, as long as they both belong to you... The always-popular Corinthian Single-Handed Race will be held this Sunday at 1 pm. Sam Walters on Happy Days is RC and will be on station at 12:30 pm. This is a PHRF race open to all sailboats, and you can fly your spinnaker if you're up to it. (Don't forget the shock cord for the tiller...) Skippers are required to wear a life jacket and must tie a safety line to the stern of the boat that trails at least 20 feet aft. Two simple rules, but important ones — just ask Dave Dougall.

Testosterone-Free Racing

JakoA beautiful day, good breeze and a nice turnout for the Corinthians' Women on the Helm Race. An "I" course was set, twice around with Hogback as the windward mark and an orange mark dropped north of the Lake George Club as a leeward buoy. Unfortunately, there were two or three identical orange marks dropped for an Opti event at the club, which seemed to cause a bit of confusion during the first downwind leg for some of the racers. More photos are posted on Flickr (Jako never looked so good!) and results are posted here.

Women at the Helm Race on Sunday

Mighty Mary
Mighty Mary had their token male in Dave Dellenbaugh, and this Sunday, as long as the boat is helmed by a woman, men can crew (token or otherwise). The Corinthians have modified their traditional Women's Race and created the new Women at the Helm Race. The race will start at 1:00 pm in the usual race area just north of Canoe Island. PHRF, open to all sailboats on the lake. In the past, many of the female sailors on the lake banded together to crew a single boat, which kept the number of boats on the start line low. By allowing men to join as trimmers, rail meat and "twing chicks" we hope to encourage more women and more boats to compete.

Corinthian's PHRF Open

Six boats came out today for the LGCYC's second event of the year (after the Ti Race), the PHRF Open. Those of you who stayed home because of the weather forecast missed a beautiful day, warm, sunny, and a nice breeze out of the south. Race committee set a twice-around "I" course with North Canoe as the windward mark and dropped a mark just off Lone Tree Island for a leeward mark. No photos on this one, but check out the complete results.

Joy Wins 2008 Brodie Cup in Ti Race

Joy Bill Dutcher's J/22 Joy won in the Spinnaker fleet of the 35th Annual Lake George / Ticonderoga Race. Happy Days took the non-Spinnaker fleet, Revolution won the Sprint fleet, and Triceratops took the multi-hull fleet. Check out the complete results, and photos from the start by Trish McCluskey. A total of 18 boats competed in the four fleets. The race began with a breeze out of the southeast, and remained light and shifty all the way up the lake. Other than the short upwind leg at the start to round the north Canoe Island mark, the race was virtually all reaching, both up and down the lake. Many wind-less patches on the lake early, and then evening brought a few storms and accompanying big gusty winds. All boats finished by 11 pm.

Single-Handed, Women's Race on Sunday

The next Corinthian race is actually two special races on Sunday, August 12: the LGCYC Single-Handed Race and the LGCYC Women’s Race. Charlie Pound on Ivory Blue is Race Committee. Depending on the number of boats present at the start for each race, the Race Committee will decide whether or not both races start at the same time. Participants in both races should plan on a 1 pm start in front of Yankee Marina. All sailors in the Single-Handed Race are required to wear a PFD and trail a line behind the boat for the duration of the race for safety. (And all sailors in the Women's Race are required to be women.)

A triangle course using Flora, Crown and Dome islands as marks, with just about everyone spending some time trapped in the doldrums between Crown and Green islands. New Corinthian Banquet Info

From Commodore Charlie Pound: “Just a quick update regarding the upcoming Annual Corinthian Awards Banquet. After a few conversations between our members and members of Y-Knot Sailing, we have decided to combine both our Fall Banquets into one great event, to be held at Camp Chingachgook. This combined dinner offers new opportunities to meet other lake sailors, tell a few tall tales, enjoy a wonderful meal and most importantly make the presentation of the funds raised during the Ti Race in person. To make this even easier, by sheer coincidence the dates of the two banquets happen to be the same, so schedule changes are minimized. So please look over the new details below, and join us for a spectacular joining of sailing forces. I look forward to seeing you all before the snow flies.”

Corinthian/Y-Knot Fall Banquet, cocktail hour starts at 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Camp Chingachgook on Pilot Knob. Dinner is your choice of beef or salmon, and includes beer and wine. Cost: $25 per person. For more information, or to make a reservation, please contact Debby Meier (518-792-4253) prior to November 6th so we can give the Camp a head count. Directions to the camp can be found on the Y-Knot site.
