Corinthian News: June 2005Commodore's Notesby Charlie Pound June 2005 Message from the CommodoreTo all Lake George Corinthian Yacht Club members, current and future,: The sailing season is truly now upon us with good breezes, sun and following seas. The Season Opener at Gaffney’s was well-attended, and a good time I believe was had by all that attended. The first of many future “thanks” to Deb Katz for pulling this together and making the evening a success. Following the season opener on May 29th was the Chowder Cup Race at the Sagamore. This year, 14 boats took part in this fundraiser for Y-Knot. While the winds were light at the start of the first race and held through the second race, the third was cancelled to allow all participants to make it back to the docks for a great lunch. The Offshore Sailing School of the Sagamore had their Colgates in the race, joined by a mixed group of J/80s, J/24s, J/22s and a few cruisers. Race results can be found at lakegeorgeracing.com. In all, between the racers, the spectator fleet on the Morgan and the fundraising dinner the night before, the preliminary numbers show $2000 raised for Y-Knot. The next major event on the schedule is the Ti Race on June 19th. This year’s fundraiser for Y-Knot has added a multihull fleet to the racers. This fleet, if the winds are favorable may set some interesting time records for the run to Ti and return. The Notice of Race, entry forms and rules can be found at lake-george.com, so please visit the site and join the festivities. The pre race sign up and bar-b-que will take place at Yankee Yacht on Friday night. It is a great time to meet new sailors, tell a few stories and raise contributions for a grand organization. If you aren’t racing, there is still room on the committee boat for the start and lots of room for the shore side partly waiting for the finishers. Please note that the race is a fundraiser, and all contributions from boats racing as well as spectators will go to a good cause enabling disabled sailors to enjoy what we take for granted. I hope to see all old and new members there. Note, as a side benefit, anyone wishing a US Coast Guard Safety Inspection can schedule one for that evening if your boat is at Yankee or the following morning bright and early before we start. It takes about 15 minutes, assures you have the proper Federal and State required safety equipment on board, and generally improves one’s safety awareness. As we will be racing into the dark in all probability, this is good reminder to Captains and Crew of their safety responsibilities. Memberships, a subject near and dear to all our hearts and vital to the continued function of the Corinthians. It is now time to renew your old membership, or join for the first time. Membership forms may be found here. We strongly encourage not only the Captains of the racing fleet to join, but encourage you crew members to join as social members allowing them to participate in all the social gatherings as well. The Sunday Race Series kicks off with our first race on Sunday, June 26th. Continuing on with the formats of last year, the Green Spinnaker fleet will race a windward/leeward format around inflatable marks, and the cruising will sail a course around natural marks. Committee boat assignments and fleet PHRFs will be listed on this website, so PLEASE check them out. If you have a scheduling conflict or a disagreement about handicaps (I can’t really imagine this), don’t wait until the last minute to make alternate arrangements or changes. We have a few new contenders in each fleet this year, so please come out and root for your favorite boat. Locations of after race festivities are listed on the website. Finally, as I finished in my last update, I would like to thank all of the Officers and Chairpersons of our Committees for 2005; without their help and commitment, the Corinthian’s would not be able to function.
