Corinthian News: April 2001
Commodore's Notes
by Herm Lintner
The Corinthian Opening Cometh. To help us all celebrate
the exodus of ice from Lake George your social committee has organized
an opening party for May 19, 7-10 pm at the Downtown Emporium in
Glens Falls. In keeping with Corinthian tradition there is no charge
for the event except for your bar beverages. The hors doeuvres
and company of interested sailors current, former and prospective
Corinthians should make for a fun kickoff to the season. The Corinthian
objective is to have enjoyable, relaxing evening and especially
welcome prospective newcomers as crew, skippers and friends.
On the Water Happening. May is really here, June is rumored
to follow and thus the winds for the Ti
Race are heading south. We hope you are getting ready
physically, mentally, and with deep pockets for the financial support
of Y-Knot fund raiser. Again this year the Ti Race will include
three fleets: Spinnaker, Non Spinnaker and Sprint. See the Notice
of Race for more info.
Early Starts. Corinthians have many opportunities to practice
for the Ti Race: Wednesday night races
beginning May 16; Lake George Mayors
Cup on June 2 & 3; the Corinthian
Race Clinic with practice starts on June 9, then LGCYC races
1 & 2 on June 10. All events noted are open to Js and
PHRF.
Quote of the Month. Inasmuch as three-quarters of
the earths surface is water, and only one-fourth is land,
the good Lords intentions are very clear. A mans time
should be divided three-fourths for boating and one-fourth
for work. ANONYMOUS
I look forward to seeing you all in Glens Falls and on Lake George!

Y-Knot Planning Spring Race Clinic May 16-20
Rebecca Stanley
The Y-Knot Disabled Sailing Association, a program of Camp Chingachgook
in Pilot Knob, is holding its second annual racing
clinic the weekend of May 16-20. The event, which concentrates
on developing skills for racing the Martin16 sailboat, will be coached
this year by Dan McCoy, Canadian National Champion and member of
the Canadian 2000 Paralympic team. McCoy, one of the top Martin16
racers in the world, will provide plenty of challenge for sailors
coming from all over the east coast and Canada.
Y-Knot expects to have eight Martins on hand, and twice as many
sailors. New this year, two of the boats are fitted with the "Turbo
package" that adds a spinnaker and means downwind legs will
be fast! Anyone interested in volunteering will be sure to catch
the excitement and leave with a whole new appreciation for the sport
we love.
Y-Knot needs volunteers willing to do everything from putting on
lifejackets to rigging and assisting in sailing the Martin 16s.
Those interested should call Rebecca Stanley evenings at 861-7418.
LGCYC Opening Event May 19
Deb Katz
We will officially open our 2001 sailing season with a social get
together on Saturday, May 19 at 7 pm at Terrios Downtown Emporium,
196 Glen St. (Rt. 9) in Glens Falls 793-8680. Guests, prospective
members, and members are all invited to renew old acquaintances
and make some new ones. Several members of the LGCYC will be assisting
Y-Knot with their race clinic earlier in the day, so our opening
event is scheduled later in the day than in previous years. Appetizers
and bar food will be provided by the Club, and there will be a cash
bar. The premises are handicap accessible. For more information,
call Deb Katz, 518-384-2015.

LGCYC Race Clinic June 9
Jon Brodie
The Race Clinic will
be held at Yankee Boating Center, starting with a shore school at
1 pm. Designed particularly for skippers and crew interested in
learning how to race, it will cover rules, procedures, and some
elements of strategy. The International Rules have been revised
for 2001, so come and learn about the major changes. In particular,
there is a new procedure for starts.
If time and weather permits, there will be some practice starts
on the lake after the shore school. This is a good opportunity to
tune up for Race 1 and 2 on the next day.
LGCYC Race 1 and 2 June 10
Bill Morris
The first and second races will be held on Sunday, June 10, with
the starting line in the area of Lake George between Yankee Boating
Center and Long Island. The Committee Boat will be Proud Mary, and
she should be on station about 11 am. Race Warning Signal for Race
1 will be at 11:25 am, with the start at 11:30 am. The new five-minute
starting sequence for 2001 will be used. The race course will probably
be 2W (windward, leeward, twice around). Race 2 will start soon
after the conclusion of Race 1. There will be an after-race party
at the Boathouse Restaurant on Rt. 9N starting at 4 pm. All LGCYC
members are invited.
LGCYC 28th Annual Ti Race June 16-17
Chuck Thorne
The 2001 Lake George Corinthian Yacht Club's Ticonderoga
Race is open to all eligible monohull sailboats. Membership
in the LGCYC is not required. Download the Notice
of Race for more information.
This year's race will again be a fund-raiser for the Y-Knot Sailing
Association. Y-Knot is a program for disabled sailors that operates
out of YMCA Camp Chingachcook. Through last years race we
were able to raise over $7,000 toward the purchase of a new boat
for Y-Knot.
This year's race starts at 9:30 am on Saturday June 16. The entry
fee for the Ti Race and events is $50 per yacht. LGCYC skippers
who pay their membership dues on or before Friday, June 15 receive
a 20% discount and all skippers who are current members of US Sailing
receive a 10% discount. All fees are payable upon registration and
include the Friday night cook out on June 15 as well as the awards
ceremony on Sunday, June 17.
In support of the Y-Knot Challenge Cup individual skippers and
crews are encouraged to seek sponsorship for their participation
in the race. Every yacht that raises a minimum of $100 in sponsorship
will be entered in the Competition for the Y-Knot Challenge Cup.
Each yacht will also receive a commemorative T-shirt for each $100
raised. So, mark your calendars and get started on your fundraising
and help us make this the biggest Ti Race ever!
Sponsorship needed for Ti Race
If you know of any companies or organizations that may be interested
in sponsorship in the form of donated money or goods, they are encouraged
to contact Chuck Thorne at 393-0110 or via
email.
Help needed for Ti Race
We are looking for folks to help with registration, T-shirt sales,
cooks, etc. for the Ti Race. If you can give us an hour or two of
your time, please contact Madelyn Thorne at 393-0110, or via
email.
Summary of the April Sailing Class
The Sailing Class run by Kim Andrews drew about 60 participants
and was very successful. We thank the Adirondack Bank for their
generosity in making available their Community Room to us. We also
thank the various members of the sailing community in this area
for assisting Kim. Copies of our March Newsletter and our Membership
Brochure were given to all participants, and we hope to see some
of them on the water this summer.
Channel 6 Morning Show
As a result of the Sailing Class, Kim Andrews was contacted by Shawn
Killinger of WRGB/Channel 6 about doing a brief live sailing class
on the Morning Show. Three two-minute segments will be broadcast
live from Saratoga Lake between 5 am and 7 am on May 21.
