Corinthian News: May 2005

Commodore’s Notes

To all Lake George Corinthian Yacht Club members’ current and future, I welcome you to the beginning of the 2005 sailing season on beautiful Lake George.

I am excited about this year and the events that will take place, beginning with the Kick Off Get Together at Gaffney’s on May 21st, through the fun and comradery to be had in the racing events and social afternoons throughout the summer, concluding with the annual banquet and Awards Dinner at the end of the year.

The Racing Season will begin this year with the Sagamore’s Chowder Cup Race on Memorial Day Weekend. The opportunity to help raise funds for Y-Knot Sailing along with the excitement of racing (or cheering your favorite boat from the comfort of the Morgan) and a wonderful lunch at the resort after the race makes this an event not to miss.

We expect this year to further build on the success of the two classes of races (around the buoys for the spinnaker class, and around the islands for the cruisers) that we instituted last year, with additional boats in both classes. Dave Dougall and his Race Committee have worked throughout the winter to set courses, define the PHRF system and handicaps for our Club and have the committee boat line up ready to go for the first race of the season. To further identify our racers this year, we will ask that all racers fly the club burgee while racing. This will improve our visibility and safety for the group. To make this possible, all paid members in the race series who do not currently have a burgee will be given one as part of their membership fee.

We will also alternate the after-race social get togethers between the Boathouse and raft-ups on the lake to offer more activities to our younger members.

The Ti Race committee, headed up by Scott Romenesko, is also making preparations for another great race that this year, will use the time-on-time system to raise the level of excitement and funds raised for the Y-Knot Sailing program for disabled sailors on Lake George another notch. I encourage all of you to take a moment to visit their web site to learn more about this excellent program, as well as read the Notice of Race and accompanying rules at lake-george.com.

In addition to the Corinthian Races, there will also be clinics and regattas sponsored by Y-Knot and the Lake George Club and Wednesday and Thursday evening races to round out the rest of the summer. Spencer Raggio is to be thanked for getting all this information listed on our web site.

So it is plain to see that this summer is shaping up to be a fun time for all. I ask that you get your membership dues in early and talk with others who are not currently members to join. Membership forms are available on our website and will be mailed in the first newsletter of the season.

Lastly and certainly not the least important, I would like to thank all of the Officers and Chairpersons of our Committees for 2005 who without their help and commitment, the Corinthians would not be able to function. Please take the opportunity to view this group on our website, and if you have any questions, or would like to lend a helping hand, email them at the addresses listed.

Once again, welcome on board,

Charlie Pound
