Corinthian News: June 2002

Commodore's Notes

by Herm Lintner
As we begin our sailing season on Lake George, it is appropriate that we recognize the special efforts this spring by Spencer Raggio, Tom Selfridge and Chuck Thorne. Spencer initiated, organized and promoted the new 2002 Corinthian sailing classes. With video organized by Tom, all three shared in presentations and discussions with 70 prospective sailors who attended regularly. Some are now planning to sail in the special Ti Race. Several are joining LGCYC. Congratulations and very special thanks for an excellent job are due Spencer, Tom and Chuck.

Ti race weekend is fast upon us: June 14, 15, 16. You have many opportunities to participate and support the LGCYC fund raising for Y-Knot. Please see Chuck Thorne’s article below and choose your role on the water or on shore.

As I personally work to return to being fully active, I hope you all join me in appreciating the fine efforts by Vice Commodore Chuck Thorne and the Executive Board in keeping our program healthy. Thanks!

LGCYC Social Events in June
by Deb Katz
The 29th annual Ti Race is scheduled for the weekend of June 14th-16th. The festivities will kick off with a BBQ at Yankee Boating Center on Friday, June 14, ~6PM. We'll race on Saturday and then the awards and BBQ again on Sunday, June 16th, ~2PM (or whenever the race finishes).

Sunday Socials remain at the Boathouse in Diamond Point through June. We meet at 4pm, and the food comes out at 5pm. Come on out for a continuation of fun and sun after sailing on Sundays. The dates are June 9, 16 and 30. (We're looking for a place that is more handicap-accessible so keep in touch for any changes). If anyone has any suggestions, please email me at debkatz@worldnet.att.net.

The Season Opener at the Waterfront on Saratoga Lake was a mild (more like a cold) success. The gazebo was a great locale, brrrrrrr. Kudos to those of us who endured. Great eats & conversations.

Ti Race June 15
by Chuck Thorne
The LGCYC’s alternative to the Volvo Ocean Race is scheduled for Saturday, June 15. The pre-race barbecue and race registration will be held on Friday evening, June 14 at Yankee Boating Center. The Ticonderoga Race is open to all eligible monohull sailboats and membership in the LGCYC is not required.

As in previous years, skippers have three fleets to choose from. The Green (spinnaker) Fleet which races to Coates Point and back for approximately 45 miles, the Yellow (non-spinnaker) Fleet, which races to Gull Island and back for approximately 35 miles, and the Blue (Sprint) Fleet which races around Dome Island, for approximately 11 miles. All three races start in front of Yankee Boating Center in Diamond Point.

The entry fee for the Ti Race and events is $50 per yacht. LGCYC skippers who pay their membership dues on or before Friday, June 15 receive a 20% discount and all skippers who are current members of US Sailing receive a 10% discount. All fees are payable upon registration and include the Friday night cookout as well as the awards ceremony on Sunday June 16.

This year we will again be raising funds toward the purchase of a boat for The Y-Knot Sailing Association. Y-Knot is a sailing organization for sailors with disabilities, which operates out of the YMCA Camp Chingachcook. In support of the Y-Knot Challenge Cup individual skippers and crews are encouraged to seek sponsorship for their participation in the race. Every yacht that raises a minimum of $100 in sponsorship will be entered in the Competition for the Y-Knot Challenge Cup. Each yacht will also receive a commemorative T-shirt for each $100 raised.

This year we are adding a fleet of novice boats that will participate in the Blue Fleet. The novice sailors will sail on a boat with an experienced skipper and are being asked to donate $50 for Y–Knot. Camp Chingachcook is making their fleet of Rainbows available for the novice fleet. Skippers wishing to participate with the novice sailors should contact Chuck Thorne.

So, mark your calendars and get started on your fundraising and help us make this the biggest Ti Race ever!

Volunteers and sponsorship are needed. Anyone who is able to volunteer or who knows of any companies or organization that may be interested in sponsorship in the form of donated money or goods are encouraged to contact Chuck Thorne at 518-393-0110 or cthorne@peoplepc.com
