Sailing InstructionsThe 36th Annual Lake George Ticonderoga RaceSaturday, June 20, 2009 StartThe starting line for all yachts will be between the Committee Boat and the round orange buoy located just east of Yankee Boating Center in Diamond Point. All yachts must check in for the race prior to the start by taking the stern of the Committee Boat to starboard, and hailing fleet, yacht name and sail number. There will be one start for all yachts in all fleets. The start sequence will be as follows: 9:00 am: Committee Boat on Station — Red Flag RECALLS: USSA Rule 29 shall apply. For individual boats who have started early, the Race Committee will sound one horn blast and fly the “X” flag per the rule. The Race Committee will attempt to notify each premature starter. Failure to hear notification does not relieve a boat of her obligation to start properly. In the event a general recall is required, it will be indicated by two horn blasts and by hoisting a First Substitute Pennant (blue and yellow) on the Committee Boat. In the event of a general recall the Preparatory Signal will be one minute after lowering the first substitute. FleetsGREEN (MONOHULL SPINNAKER) & RED (MULTIHULL) FLEETS: The course is approximately 45 statute miles. The northern mark is either one of two buoys located about 300 yards southwest of Coates Point: the buoy marked “BB” and its associated spar, or the buoy marked “B” and its associated spar. No Race Committee personnel will man either mark. Racers will take either mark “BB” or mark “B” to port. Yachts competing in the Red Fleet may use any sails, including spinnakers and gennakers, that they declare upon registration; the Race Committee will make PHRF ratings adjustments as necessary. YELLOW (MONOHULL NON-SPINNAKER) FLEET: The course is approximately 35 statute miles. The northern mark is Gull Island near the east shore of the lake opposite the Village of Hague. No Race Committee personnel will man this mark. Racers will take this mark to port. BLUE (“SPRINT”) FLEET: The course is approximately 9 statute miles. The northern mark is Dome Island. No Race Committee personnel will man the mark. Racers will take Dome Island to port and return south to the finish line. Yachts competing in the Blue Fleet may use any sails, including spinnakers and gennakers, that they declare upon registration; the Race Committee will make PHRF ratings adjustments as necessary. CoursesThe Race Committee shall post the course on its transom prior to the Preparatory signal. Reasonable effort will be made to have a start to windward. “A” Course: Wind direction permitting the starting Line will be crossed in a northerly direction. An “A” sign will be shown from the stern of the committee boat designating the “A” course. All yachts will then proceed to their respective northern marks. “B” Course: Should the wind be out of the southern quadrants, a “B” sign will be shown from the stern of the committee boat. This will designate that boats will cross the start line to windward toward a racing tetrahedron placed windward of the line. All boats will round the tetrahedron on their port side, then turn to the north for their respective northern marks. FinishThe Finish line for all boats will be between the orange buoy just east of Yankee Boating Center and the flagpole at Yankee. All yachts must hail name and number to the Race Committee prior to finishing (The Race Committee will monitor VHF channel 16 and use channel 66 as the working channel). After the sprint racers finish, the finish line will be moved. During the hours of darkness, yachts must hail the race committee two minutes prior to crossing the finish line and illuminate their sail numbers as they cross the finish line. Yachts which have finished may be disqualified for interfering with yachts trying to finish. The Race Committee will be on station at the Finish Line until all yachts have finished. All yachts that drop out of the race must notify the Race Committee immediately, either via VHF or by phone at 518-796-9428. In the event of extremely dispersed fleets the Race Committee may abandon its finish station but will use its best judgment to provide an official finish for all boats who notify the Race Committee they intend to complete the course. General InformationIf no yacht in the Green “Spinnaker” Fleet reaches the northern mark by 8 am Sunday, the race will be abandoned and rescheduled for a later date if possible. Yachts which drop out or do not finish for any reason must contact the Race Committee in person, by VHF radio (channel 16 or 66) or by phone (518-796-9428) at the earliest opportunity. The Race Committee must be notified to verify that all boats are safe. The Race Committee will hail all fleets at 6 pm, 9 pm and midnight Saturday to establish location of all yachts. If you are able to respond to the general broadcast please note all boats in your vicinity and relay the information back to the Race Committee. A US Coast Guard-approved PFD shall be worn by all crew members on deck during the hours of darkness. This is not required for crew members in the cockpit. All yachts, skippers and crew shall comply with regulations of the Lake George Park Commission. Any yacht which receives a summons from any official agency patrolling the lake may be disqualified. PENALTIES & PROTESTS: All skippers are expected to adhere to the racing rules and sail considering the spirit and distance of the Ti Race. If, however, there are violations of the rules, penalties shall be in accordance with Rule 44.1 and 44.2 (two turns) or as administered via protest. Formal protests shall be submitted to the Race Committee within two hours of the Committee Boat reaching shore at Yankee Boating Center after the last yacht finishes. REDRESS: In accordance with Rule 86.1b, for this Ti Race, an exception is added to Propulsion Rule 42.3 as follows: In the event of a serious storm, those skippers forced to use motor propulsion to assure safety of boat and crew may apply for redress provided: that the Race Committee is informed of this action as soon as practical after the motor use; that the action did not advance the position of the boat in the race; and that a written request is submitted to the Race Committee within two hours after the race outlining specific times of action taken and certifying the lack of race advance. AwardsThe Brodie Cup, named in honor of Bob and Sheila Brodie of Yankee Boating Center, will be awarded to the winning yacht in the Green Fleet. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in the green, yellow and blue fleets, and the top two finishers in the red fleet, all based on corrected time. An award will also be given for the best finish by a disabled racer in their class (captain or crew). The acceptance of entry does not in any way curtail the complete and unequivocal responsibility of the skipper for the seaworthiness or safety of his/her yacht and crew. By electing to participate, each participant agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the Race Committee, the Race organizers and its sponsors for any loss or damage to person or property. It shall be the sole responsibility of each yacht to decide whether to start or continue racing. The Race Committee reserves the right to determine eligibility of any entrant.
